The method involves conditioning raw tobacco (10) (S1), and moistening and drying the conditioned tobacco (11). The moistened and dried tobacco is stored (S3) in a closed storage device at temperature of about 45 degree Celsius for a period of about 30 minutes. Oxygen contents of a storing atmosphere is increased by supplying oxygen-containing gas during the storage of the tobacco in the storage device, where 20 Vol % of the oxygen contents of the storing atmosphere are held during the storage of the tobacco in the storage device. An independent claim is also included for a closed storage device for storing tobacco during a treatment method.
