The method involves agreeing the communication participants on a synchronous communication protocol at the beginning of a communication for the subsequent communication by an asynchronous communication protocol. A data symbol is transmitted from a transmitter to a receiver in synchronization with the stroke of a clock signal in the synchronous communication protocol. The clock signal is generated for the asynchronous communication protocol from a base clock signal, which is provided by a communication user for regulation. An independent claim is included for a system with a terminal and a portable data carrier for executing the communication method.
