The method involves providing the inverter (10) with controllable switches (SHA-SHC,SLA-SLC) and free-wheeling diodes (DHA-DHC,DLA-DLC), to provide multi-phase electric current (IU,IV,IW) to electrical machine (14). The inverter is controlled in different switching states to provide voltage space vector and current space vector. One of switches is permanently closed in specific angular range of phase angle of current space vector to reduce switching losses of switch. The angular range is set in response to phase shift between voltage and current space vectors. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) device for actuating inverter; and (2) motor vehicle drive train.
