The method involves setting inverter (10) with controllable switches for providing multiphase electric current to electric machine (14). The inverter is driven to set different switching states of switch. A voltage space pointer is formed around voltage space pointer units by combination of different switching states. A switch is matched with voltage space pointer unit in each switching state. The voltage space pointer units are formed outside of angular range. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a device for controlling inverter; and (2) a motor vehicle drive strand.
