The system has an image pickup element (4) that is provided with electromagnetic radiation (7) of sensitive surface. An imaging unit (3) is provided for projecting electromagnetic radiation on sensitive surface of image pickup element. A microlens arrangement (8) is formed in optical path of electromagnetic radiation. The image of observed scene is generated from partial images detected by main unit in light field area. The object distance is determined by partial images. An independent claim is included for a method for operating camera system.
