The process comprises continuously pouring a stream of liquid magnesium over a nozzle and introducing the stream between two counter-rotating casting wheels having a circumferential, corresponding caliber (14), exiting the liquid magnesium and completely solidifying the liquid magnesium before a closest point between the casting wheels, and rolling the solidified magnesium. The liquid magnesium is completely solidified at a small distance in front of the narrowest point between the casting wheels. The method further comprises cooling the rolled magnesium wire. The method further comprises cooling the rolled magnesium wire after exiting from the casting wheels using a liquid inert gas. The magnesium wire has a round, an oval or n-polygonal cross section, and a largest diameter of 1-20 mm. An independent claim is included for an apparatus for preparation of magnesium wire.
