The system has an image pickup element (4) comprising a surface sensitive to electromagnetic radiation (7). An imaging system (3) projects the electromagnetic radiation on the sensitive surface of the image pickup element, where the projected electromagnetic radiation is direction-selectively detected by the image pickup element. A microlens arrangement (8) is formed and arranged in an optical path of the electromagnetic radiation. Two sub-images of an image detected the system are generated by image process. The generated sub-images are assigned to object distances. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for operating a camera system (2) a vehicle.
