The method involves detecting automatic errors by a control device, and starting error routines after detection of the errors. Conveyance of an endless recording carrier (3) is continued with one of the error routines. An error elimination module is executed to overcome the errors. A determination is made to check whether error elimination is carried out successfully. A printing process is continued, the elimination module is repeated or a digital printing system (1) is stopped based on a test result. Rubbish is produced and automatically removed during execution of the elimination module. An independent claim is also included for a printing system for printing an endless recording carrier.
