The method involves identifying a visibility obstacle if a value of radiated power that is refracted towards the rear and detected by a distance sensor (12) of an adaptive cruising speed control system or an adaptive speed regulating device (11), drops below a predetermined threshold value. The threshold value is continuously adjusted during operation of a motor vehicle (10) i.e. car, based on a quantity characterizing an actual slope of a roadway, in a displacement direction of the motor vehicle, where the quantity is an actual slope variation coefficient.
