The method involves controlling an effective engine torque (Ceff) at a set point torque (Ccons). Number of cylinders used for combustion is modified when the set point torque crosses a determined minimum torque threshold during the control of effective engine torque. The modification of number of cylinders is conditioned by realization of a criterion chosen among exceedance of a preset threshold of temperature of engine cooling fluid, exceedance of preset threshold of air temperature and engine speed, and an exhaust temperature ranging between low and high temperature thresholds. An independent claim is also included for a car.
