The engine has a cylinder head comprising outer cylinders and inner cylinders i.e. shiftable cylinders, arranged in series. The inner and outer cylinders comprise outlet for discharging exhaust gases from the cylinders. An exhaust valve is equipped with an exhaust opening. Exhaust openings of the outer cylinders and exhaust openings of the inner cylinders have different prolonged aperture durations. The exhaust openings of the outer cylinders have prolonged aperture duration (delta long), and the exhaust openings of the inner cylinders have short aperture duration (delta short). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a spark ignition internal combustion engine.
