Invention relates to a system for video-based vehicle detection. A video based vehicle detection system comprising an image acquisition module (1) for capturing a video image containing a region of interest (10); a line isolation module (2) for acquiring at least one scan line (11), especially one horizontal scan line (11); a motion detection module (3) for detecting a movement on the scan line (11); an object detection module (4) for detecting a presence of a vehicle (13) in the region of interest (10) using the scan line (11); and a vehicle counting module (5) for counting vehicles (13) in the region of interest (10) by processing information received from the motion detection module (3) and the object detection module (4). Said invention improves vehicle detection in intensive traffic flow and detection of vehicles that change its lane in a region of interest.
