The invention relates to a method for operating a motor vehicle exhaust gas system (10) through which exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine can flow and which comprises at least one oxidation catalyst (14) and at least one particle filter (16) arranged downstream of the oxidation catalyst (14) in the flow direction of the exhaust gas. The particle filter (16) is regenerated in order to reduce a load on the particle filter (16) by particles filtered out of the exhaust gas. The regeneration of the particle filter (16) is carried out dependent on at least one aging value which characterizes an aging state of the oxidation catalyst (14). The invention also relates to an exhaust gas system (10) for an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
