The present invention relates to a motion detection method and a motion detection device for detecting invalid motion by using support vector data description (SVDD). A motion detection method in a video surveillance system, according to one embodiment of the present invention, comprises the steps of: receiving an input image; setting a region of interest for a specific object of which motion is detected in the input image; generating test data by extracting features for the specific object; determining whether the test data is valid or not by using support vector data description (SVDD); and, if not so, excluding the motion of the specific object corresponding to the test data from a motion detection area.
