PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for steam reforming to convert carbonaceous material into a synthesis gas.SOLUTION: A method is for steam reforming carbonaceous material 9 into a synthesis gas 11 by using a single stage process of heating the carbonaceous material 1 in a rotary kiln 9 at an elevated reforming temperature so that the carbonaceous material 1 undergoes substantially complete conversion to synthesis gas or by using a dual stream, multiple-stage process of heating carbonaceous material 9 to a reforming temperature, below that at which metallic materials typically vaporize, to form gaseous and solid materials. Furthermore, the gaseous materials in a second stage reforming kiln is reformed at an elevated reforming temperature to form synthesis gas 20. Carbon char is separated from the solid material for further processing. |
