PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coolant composition capable of improving fuel-saving effects of an internal combustion engine, and to provide a method for driving the internal combustion engine by using the composition.SOLUTION: A coolant composition having ≥8.5 mm/s at 25°C and ≤2.0 mm/s at 100°C of kinematic viscosity includes polysaccharides having copolymer structures of galactose or a galactose derivative, and anhydrogalactose or an anhydrogalactose derivative as a viscosity characteristic improver, and a base. The method for driving an internal combustion engine by using the coolant composition as a coolant of the internal combustion engine is also provided.
