This invention relates to a method of and apparatus for opening used metal pipes (15) to deform them into curved or substantially flat plates and comprises splitting the pipe (15) longitudinally, anchoring a first side of the split to a rigid base (2), securing a traction member to the second side of the split and drawing the traction member over the pipe (15) to open the pipe (15). The invention is useful to open metal pipes (15) into curved or substantially flat plates.
