The method involves determining maximum theoretical life span for determined and predetermined operating conditions. The current life span-calculations are carried out cyclically during the operation according to initial operation of the component taking into account the currently existing, actual operating conditions based on measured current operating parameters. The remaining life span is determined based on all the current life span-calculations since the initial operation. An independent claim is included for an electronically commutated electric motor with an electronic controller for executing the method.
