The position measuring instrument has a scanning unit (2) that is provided with several detectors (E-G) which form a corresponding scanning signal from sub-regions (A) of series of code elements. An evaluation unit (4) has a structure that generates one item of code information for series of code elements from corresponding scanning signals, and forms corresponding code words from one item of code information. The code words are composed of N and K items of code information from successive code elements of primary and secondary code tracks (11,12), with N and K being greater than 1.
