An upright vacuum cleaner comprises a handle assembly (4, fig 2) for manoeuvring the cleaner across the floor, the handle assembly (4, fig 2) being moveable between a storage position and an operative position. A locking member 12 is provided for locking the handle assembly (4, fig 2) in the operative position, which locking member 12 is moveable between a release position (fig 3) and a locking position. A manual release member 16 is arranged for manual actuation by the user to release the locking member 12 for movement from the locking position to the release position. The release member 16 is operatively connected to the handle assembly (4, fig 2) such that, during movement of the handle assembly (4, fig 2), the release member 16 moves from a first, depressed position to a second protruding position. This gives a clear indication to the user of the presence and function of the release member 16, reducing confusion for the user. |
