The road paver has a pair of sensors (2a,2b) to define a coordinate system (6) and to perform distance measurement to pavement plane at intervals in order to determine distance between sensor and point on surface of plane. A layer thickness measuring device (1) combines the distance to the plane measured by sensor in order to determine pair of vectors, and determines the layer thickness (11) of laying material. An independent claim is included for method for determining a layer thickness of a laying material laid on a plane by a road paver.
