A passive heave compensator 30 includes a main hydraulic cylinder 32, including a moveable piston 42 having a piston rod 46 extendible through the main hydraulic cylinder 32 and a piston head 44, a gas phase 64 above the piston head 44, and at least one oil phase 54 below the piston head; an upper connection point associated with the main hydraulic cylinder and a lower connection point associated with the piston rod; and at least one accumulator 34, the or each accumulator having a moveable separator 40 to divide the accumulator between a gas phase 36 above the separator 40, and an oil phase 38 below the separator 40, and the or each oil phase 38 being in communication with an oil phase 54, 56 in the main hydraulic cylinder 32; characterized in that the main hydraulic cylinder 32 further comprises a cylinder sleeve 48 co-axial with the piston head 44 to provide an outer cylinder, in co-ordination with the piston head, the gas phase and the at least one oil phase in the main hydraulic cylinder. The arrangement is such that in use the cross sectional area of the oil phase 54, 56 is variable along the length of the main hydraulic cylinder 32. |
