A catalytic converter substrate 90 comprises a plurality of micro-structured hollow ceramic tubes 20, each tube having an inside surface (30, fig 3) and an outside surface (40, fig 3). At least one of the inside surface and an outside surface has a plurality of openings to micro-channels (55, fig 4), which extend from the openings in the at least one surface towards the other surface. The catalytic converter substrate has a catalytically active coating, which may comprise a precious metal such as a platinum group metal, or a non-precious metal, such as nickel. A kit for a catalytic converter also includes an insulation mat 70 and a substrate housing 80 for receiving the substrate mat with a tight fit. A method for fabricating a catalytic converter may include the steps of forming a plurality of micro-structured tubes using phase inversion and sintering, and gathering the plurality of tubes and adhering or fastening the tubes in an array. A method of retro-fitting a catalytic converter to an existing exhaust system is also disclosed. |
