Pulse Code Modulated (PCM) digital audio streams are coded so as to allow standard PCM players to output lossy, uncompressed signals having a sample rate of 44.1 kHz according to the most significant 16 bits of the samples, while high resolution PCM players can also recover lossless 24 bit, 96 kHz audiophile output by decoding the least significant 8 bits of the samples in addition. A bandsplitter (3) compresses high (28) and low (15) frequencies separately, and a bandjoiner (10) then decompresses and reconstructs the samples in either the noise-shaped truncated format or the recovered lossless format 11. |
