A working electrode for use in a dye-sensitised solar cell comprises a substrate coated with sintered TiO2 powder, in which, prior to sintering, a TiO2 base powder is pre-treated to create on it a nano-titanium dioxide deposit, using an inorganic titanium compound. Also disclosed is the method for processing titanium dioxide for use in the above working electrode. The inorganic titanium compound may be titanium oxydichloride, TiOCl2. The substrate may be comprised of titanium, a conductive glass or a conductive polymer. The present invention requires treating the titanium oxide before sintering (pre-treating) as opposed to the prior art which relates to treating the titanium oxide after sintering (post-treating). Post-treatment processes are hazardous and unwieldy, adding extra process steps and waste by-products, making them less cost-effective. Producing nano-deposits on the titanium powder surface increases dye uptake, sintering connectivity, light scattering, adhesion and cohesion; leading to improved efficiency in the finished solar cell.
|
