A controller for controlling an energy storage system (ESS) of the present invention, a control method, and a computer readable recording medium in which a software program for controlling the same is saved are provided. The controller of the energy storage system according to the embodiment of the present invention is located within the energy storage system including at least one battery and senses whether the energy storage system is in a charging mode or a discharging mode and computes an opening voltage of the at least one battery and calculates at least one of a maximum charging current and a maximum discharging current and controls charging and discharging actions of the energy storage system based on the calculated maximum charging current and the maximum discharging current.
