Provided in an embodiment of the present invention are a method for determining the number of photos capable of being taken and a photographing device, the method comprising: determining the current shooting mode; acquiring the average value of the photo size prior to the present shooting under the current shooting mode, the average value of the photo size being calculated according to the storage space occupied by the photos taken prior to the present shooting under the current shooting mode and the number of photos taken prior to the present shooting under the current shooting mode; and determining the number of photos capable of being taken prior to the present shooting according to the storage space currently available and the average value of the aforementioned photo size. The technical solution of the present invention calculates the average value of the photo size by using the storage space occupied by the photos taken under the current shooting mode and the number of photos taken under the current shooting mode, thus improving the precision of the determined number of photos capable of being taken.
