PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet material feeder capable of detecting a failure of a solenoid in an early stage.SOLUTION: A sheet material feeder includes: a rotating cam member 621 that is connected to a cam rotating shaft member 622 and can rotate to a first rotating position where a sheet loading plate 60 is positioned in a standby position and a second rotating position where it is positioned in a feeding position; a cam-side gear 623 connected to the cam rotating shaft member 622; a motor 631 that rotates a motor rotating shaft member 635; a motor-side gear 636 connected to the motor rotating shaft member 635; an intermediate gear 650 that can be moved between a transmission position and a non-transmission position; a solenoid 670 that can drive the intermediate gear 650 to be positioned in the transmission position when an ON signal is received; and a failure detecting part 684 that detects a failure of the solenoid 670 when there is no fluctuation in the load of the motor 631 detected by a motor load detecting part 632, while a solenoid drive control part 682 is outputting an ON signal to the solenoid 670.
