PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress an increase in size of a treatment apparatus while adopting such a procedure that slurry of persistent waste having high water content is charged in the treatment apparatus as it is.SOLUTION: A volume reduction treatment method for persistent waste is provided in which slurry of the persistent waste and superheated steam are supplied to a dry distillation part and the persistent waste is pyrolyzed. The slurry of the persistent waste having >70% water content is supplied to one end of the dry distillation part 11 and gas generated by pyrolysis of the persistent waste is discharged from the other end of the dry distillation part 11. The temperature of the other end of the dry distillation part 11 is controlled to be 460-700°C.
