In the refining of hydrocarbon oils by sulphuric acid, bauxite or similar treatment to remove unsaturated hydrocarbons, the oils are submitted to a preliminary treatment in the liquid phase with nascent hydrogen. Crude petroleum oils or distillates, or coal tar distillates, especially motor benzole, are refluxed with sulphuric acid and zinc dust or scrap iron, or with caustic soda and zinc. The purified oil is separated and treated with concentrated sulphuric acid and finally is distilled. The product is used as a motor fuel.
