Disclosed are a portable terminal capable of docking with an external device and a method for changing a screen thereof. The method for changing a screen of the portable terminal comprises the steps of: receiving a docking release signal according to the undocking from an external device; outputting a warning message informing a user that data loss can occur according to the undocking; receiving a confirmation input with respect to the warning message; updating a value currently set as system configuration information of the portable terminal to a value corresponding to information on a display device of the portable terminal; and delivering a configuration information change event indicating a change in the system configuration information to a running application or restarting a screen of the running application so that the application running in the portable terminal can reconfigure a screen layout to be displayed by reflecting the value corresponding to the information on the display device of the portable terminal.
