352,491. Cupping blanks. CHATWIN, Ltd., T., Victoria Works, Gt. Tindal Street, and COX, A., Harlech, Warwick Road, Olton, both in Birmingham. March 27, 1930, No. 9756. [Class 100 (ii).] In inserting the bottom disc of a cardboard or like tubular carton, the projecting edge of the body, which is finally turned over the flange of the bottom disc, is incurled or displaced inwards to engage over the flange of the bottom piece so as to make an initial interlock between the two parts. As shown, the engagement of the part is effected by a fixed die A and a movable die B, the die A having a conical part c for receiving the conical carton body a and an enlarged mouth c<3>, c' at the part accommodating the part a<1> of the body which is to be turned over the flange of the bottom disc ; the part c<3> is cylindrical and the part c<4> slightly conical terminating in a shoulder c<2>. The die B comprises a head e<1> carried by a stem e<2> and shaped to correspond with the parts c<2>, c' of the die A and is moved to engage a bottom disc b, seated on a ledge c<5> of the die A above the mouth c<3>. The disc is forced into the part a<1> of the carton and flanged while the part a<1> takes the shape of the mouth c<3>. Near the end of the movement of the die B, the parts encounter the shoulder c<2> and, by the pressure of the dies, the part a<1> of the carton body is curled or rolled slightly inwards over the flange bl of the bottom disc and interlocks therewith sufficiently to prevent displacement of the disc during the removal of the carton from the die A and transfer to the tools or machine performing the final securing operation. A spring-controlled sleeve f mounted on the stem e<2> of the die B prevents the carton being dragged out of the die A on the return movement of the die B. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 317,765, [Class 100 (ii), Printing processes &c.]. |
