In response to driver selection of park, a vehicle transmission 13 is commanded to momentarily select and hold neutral before park, whilst a vehicle wheel brake is applied. Such an arrangement avoids trapping torque in the driveline, and thus can obviate pawl 'thump' when park is next disengaged. A control system comprises a rotary selector 16 is mounted on a centre console 17 and controls a condition of the transmission via an electric transmission actuator 14. A selector detector senses if a park or neutral condition has been selected and, if a brake controller has automatically commanded brake application, a park pawl is engaged after a pre-determined delay. The actuator 14 may also momentarily engage and hold the neutral condition of the transmission prior to engagement of the park pawl. The pre-determined delay may be settable and range from 1 second to 0.35 seconds. |
