Beeswax, shellac wax, or other animal wax is purified by decolourizing carbon activated by zinc chloride while the wax is in solution in liquid aliphatic monohydric alcohols and/or their esters with aliphatic monocarboxylic acids. Ethyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, and ethyl acetate are specified solvents. For example, 100 gm. of beeswax is dissolved in 1500 cc. of alcohol, and is boiled for 1 /ba1/2/be hours with 100 gm. of zinc chloride carbon obtained as described in Specification 10126/14, [Class 90, Non-metallic elements], the mixture is centrifuged or filtered hot, and the solvent recovered by distillation. Specification 299,357, [Class 91, Oils &c.], also is referred to.
|
