<PICT:0357172/III/1> <PICT:0357172/III/2> An apparatus for the continuous extraction of seeds and similar materials with a solvent consists of a rotatable drum having permeable walls, through which the extract is filtered. A pre-treating drum may be provided in which the seeds are impregnated with the solvent and the saturated raw material is then fed axially into the filtering drum. In a suitable apparatus, seeds are fed into a hopper 21, Fig. 1, and are passed by a screw conveyer 23 mounted on a hollow shaft 15, into a rotating drum 1 where they are impregnated with solvent admitted through an inlet 17 and perforations 19 in the shaft. The materials are mixed by helical blades 9, and pass through a constriction 25 in which is mounted a screw 24, to a rotating filtering drum 11 mounted in a stationary casing 7. The shaft 15 and the drums are rotated by separate driving means, whereby the duration of extraction treatment may be regulated. The saturated material in the drum 11 is treated with a further amount of solvent supplied through an inlet 18 and perforations 20, and is mixed by blades 10. The resulting extract filters through the permeable wall of the filtering drum 11, which consists of silk impregnated against moisture, and is finally drawn off through an outlet 8 to a distillation apparatus. The residue in the drum is conveyed by a screw 26 to a discharge pipe 27, and may be again extracted, or pressed to yield a further quantity of extract. A pressing operation may also be inserted between the two drum treatments. In a modification, Fig. 4, the filtering drum 2 is divided into drum cells 30 coupled together by constrictions 28. Raw material is conveyed through the cells by a screw and blades 10, and is treated in countercurrent with a solvent through the hollow shaft. The solvent passes from the first to succeeding cells through overflows 34 in the partitions 29.
