An instrument for controlling bleeding comprises a shaft having a proximal end and a distal end; an inflatable balloon having a proximal end secured to said shaft and a distal end that is inverted and that is secured to the distal end of said shaft; and an actuator for selectively inflating said inflatable balloon. The instrument suitably further comprises barbs projecting from the distal end of said shaft, preferably along a longitudinal axis extending between the shaft's proximal and distal ends.
