Metal surfaces are protected against corrosion by first applying a coating containing a high proportion of lime mixed with a binder, and treating with a colloidal solution of silica obtained by the hydrolysis of an alcohol solution of a silicon ester, whereby an insoluble lime silicate is formed. A final coating of cellulose lacquer, varnish or enamel may be applied. The primary coating composition may consist of Portland or hydraulic cement, or lime, a binder such as glue, gelatin, casein, egg albumen, blood serum, or algin or other vegetable proteins, a filler such as alkaline earth, magnesite, asbestine or pigments together with a little resorcin as preservative. The mixture is ground with water, or a mineral, animal, or vegetable oil to form a paste which is applied by brush or by spraying. The coating when dry is then treated with a colloidal solution of silica containing formalin, and preferably a little linseed oil. The process may be applied to ship's tanks which are to contain oils, molasses or salt water.
|
