PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hollow optical fiber that can transmit long wavelength laser light at a low loss and can be formed into a long fiber through a relatively simple process, and to provide a method for manufacturing the optical fiber. SOLUTION: The hollow optical fiber 1 includes: a glass tube 2 having a coefficient A1 of linear expansion and a softening point T1; and a metal layer 3 formed on the inner circumference face of the glass tube, having a coefficient A2 of linear expansion slightly greater than A1, and having a melting point T2 close to the T1. The metal layer 3 is formed on the inner circumference face of the glass tube by: blowing gas to an aerosol container to change fine particle raw material into an aerosol; supplying the fine particle raw material in the aerosol state together with the gas into the glass tube 2 having the coefficient A1 of linear expansion, which is almost equal to or slightly smaller than the A2, and having the softening point T1 close to T2; and heating the glass tube 2 from the outer circumference of the glass tube 2 while evacuating the inside of the glass tube 2.
