An isolation device 2 is located on a structure (7, fig. 14) defining a fire chamber (3, fig. 14) of a fireplace (1, fig. 14) for facilitating selectively isolating a chimney flue from the fire chamber. The isolation device comprises a mounting plate 8 mounted on the structure within the fireplace and a closure plate 20 supported on the mounting plate and movable between guide members 22 mounted on the mounting plate between an open state, with the flue communicating with the fire chamber, and a closed state, with the flue isolated from the fire chamber. Preferably, the closure plate slides between the guide members. A handle 24 extending from the closure plate is accessible through the fire chamber for urging the closure plate between the open state and the closed state. A deflector plate 27 may be mounted on the mounting plate to deflect heat downwardly into the fire chamber when the closure plate is in the open state. Preferably, the isolation device is designed to be retrofitted to a fireplace. |
