The present invention relates to in taking an image and, particularly, to an apparatus and a method for taking an images based on the velocity of a subject which adjusts the photographing speed based on the velocity of the subject. The apparatus is characterized by comprising: a distance measuring unit for periodically measuring a distance to a subject which is located within a detection area where an image is taken; a velocity calculation unit for calculating how far the subject has moved using the distance measured by the distance measuring unit and calculating the velocity of the subject using the calculated distance; and a control unit for controlling the photographing speed of the subject according the accelerations of the subject by comparing the calculated velocity with at least one reference velocity.
