PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a modified diene polymer improving dispersibility of silica added to achieve both reduction in rolling resistance and stability on a wet road surface as one property of various properties required for a pneumatic tire for an automobile.SOLUTION: A modified diene polymer is obtained by graft-modifying a diene polymer with a polyether to which a mercapto group is bonded via a diurethane bond. When the modified diene polymer is added to a silica-compounded rubber composition for a pneumatic tire for an automobile, dispersibility of the silica blended into the rubber composition is improved, and the performance of both the reduced rolling resistance and stability on a wet road surface that is inherent to silica can be achieved sufficiently.
