PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing unit which can reduce stop time for stopping printing a bar code on a medium even when a heating element of a thermal head is deteriorated or damaged.SOLUTION: A printing unit 1 prints a bar code on roll paper 11 conveyed along a conveyance path. A thermal head 13 is formed by arranging a plurality of heating elements in a line in a width direction of the conveyance path. A print control part 4 drives the plurality of heating elements of the thermal head 13 individually based on print data, and prints an image including the bar code on the medium conveyed along the conveyance path. An inappropriate printing part is detected by comparing the print data on the printed bar code and read image data generated by reading the bar code, to detect a defective heating element. The bar code is printed on the medium in a position where the detected defective heating element does not print a dot in printing the bar code.
