The present invention relates to a backlight driver capable of preventing a backlight flicker by filtering an input PWM signal and by removing an unstable duty cycle although the input PWM signal is not stable, and to a method for driving the same. The backlight driver of the present invention comprises a duty cycle detection unit which detects a duty cycle of an input PWM signal; a duty cycle filter which detects a difference between the current duty cycle and the previous duty cycle inputted by the duty cycle detection unit and determines whether or not the detected duty cycle difference meets a predetermined reference condition to select and output one of the current duty cycle and the previous duty cycle; a PWM generation unit which generates an output PWM signal in which the duty cycle selected from the duty cycle filter is reflected on a pressure synchronization signal to be outputted as a backlight unit.
