<p>The present invention relates to a semiconductor memory device and an operating method thereof and, specifically, a semiconductor memory device and an operating method thereof in order to store data. The semiconductor memory device according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises: a memory cell array having a plurality of memory cells; and a peripheral circuit, connected to one word line among the memory cells, for programming a first to fourth memory cells continuously arranged, wherein the peripheral circuit programs the first and the fourth memory cells in a first section and programs the second and the third memory cells in a second section.
