The method involves purifying carbon dioxide rich gas i.e. smoke (7), in a processing unit (9), where the carbon dioxide rich gas contains 3% of oxygen in dry base, and is derived from a oxycombustion boiler (5). The carbon dioxide rich gas is purified to produce a carbon dioxide rich product (11) and a waste gas (13) impoverished of carbon dioxide and containing oxygen. The waste gas impoverished from carbon dioxide or a filtrate (17) derived from the waste gas is sent to another oxycombustion boiler (25). An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for treating waste gas obtained from a purification process of a gas rich in carbon dioxide.
