A process and a vehicle assistance system for determining parkable free parking area close to motor vehicles is proposed, with the use of a central computing center, in which the geographic coordinates of parking area are determined, and of a plurality of user terminals, which are arranged in a decentralized manner in vehicles and which communicate with the computing center and which are each functionally connected with at least one location determination module. A parking location signal of the corresponding vehicle is transmitted by means of a corresponding user terminal to the computing center when the vehicle has been parked, after which the parking location signal is compared in the computing center with the coordinates of the parking area, which are contained there, in order to make a distinction in the parking area between parkable free parking area and nonparked, occupied parking area, so that the free parking area or the occupied parking area is contained. Inquiries about free parking area are transmitted to the computing center automatically or as needed by means of a corresponding user terminal, and the inquiries comprise the current position of the vehicle. Furthermore, information on parkable free parking area close to the motor vehicle, which information depends on the current position of the vehicle, is transmitted from the computing center to the user terminal making the inquiry. |
