PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method for producing alkali cellulose or a cellulose derivative.SOLUTION: A method includes: a step of pulverizing a cellulose-based material to granulate it, and then filling the granulated cellulose-based material into a reaction vessel, when producing alkali cellulose and/or a cellulose derivative by using the granulated cellulose-based material having an unsettled bulk density in the range of 120 to 450 g/l or an settled bulk density in the range of 200 to 650 g/l; and a step of bringing the granulated cellulose-based material into contact with an alkali solution and an etherifying or esterifying agent.
