With respect to an exhaust gas purification device for an internal combustion engine equipped with an NOx catalyst disposed in the exhaust passageway of the internal combustion engine, the present invention addresses the problem of minimizing an increase in emissions caused by a process executed for heating the NOx catalyst. In order to solve the above-mentioned problem, the exhaust gas purification device for an internal combustion engine according to the present invention is configured such that when the amount of an increase in the NOx purification rate is smaller than the amount of an increase in the temperature of the NOx catalyst, the exhaust gas purification device defers the execution of the heating process and executes a process for reducing the flow rate of the exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine and a process for reducing the amount of smoke discharged from the internal combustion engine. |
