The method involves assigning a unique address to an electronic control unit (104) for accessing the control unit. Data e.g. maps, are transferred to the control unit for activation of a software-based function over an on-line connection of a part of a provider-side server (100). The control unit is accessed by the address stored at a provider-side and uniquely assigned to the control unit. An internet protocol address is uniquely associated with the control unit. The unique address is assigned to the control unit in a motor car-internal network. An independent claim is also included for a device for activating or adapting a software-based function in an electronic control unit.
