PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a &bgr;-type sialon and a light emitting device exhibiting high light emission peak intensity.SOLUTION: In a &bgr;-type sialon formed by solution-treating EU expressed by a general formula: SiAlON:Eu, a D10 value and a D90 value of a particle diameter distribution measured by a laser diffraction scattering method satisfy a relation of (D90-D10)/(D90+D10)<0.8. It is preferable that an a-axial lattice constant and a chromaticity x of &bgr;-type sialon satisfies a relation of (a-axial lattice constant (Å))≤(0.1075×chromaticity x+7.5742). |
